James Shivers is a learning enthusiast, poet, and artist.
He holds degrees from three countries including a doctorate in American Studies with an emphasis in visual poetics. His broad educational experience fueled his innovative work as a Visiting Fellow at Yale where he began to see the connection between avant-garde poetics and the process of learning. Shifting his career path to the high school classroom he has used his understanding of visual rhetoric and literacy to foster student critical and creative language growth.
Grounded in his 12 years of classroom experience, Dr. Shivers is shaping the educational fields of visual literacy, media and composition studies. He regularly leads educational workshops, and teaches pre-service teachers at UCONN. He also works closely with the education department at YCBA on visual literacy where he teaches at their summer institute, Expanding Literacies, Extending Classrooms.
